Reading Support

If your child in High 5 until -1st grade, they are learning many skills within the English Language and how to apply them to read.  Here are some of the rules that might help at home as well. 

After your student knows how to break apart word (decoding) look below!

We encourage your child to read every night for 20 minutes.  We ask your child record at least 4 nights a week as part their homework.  I know that reading 20 minutes a night sounds like a lot, but your child will learn so much!  Look at this visual below to help you realize how much your child really can learn!

When choosing a book for your child to read, it should be a "just-right" book.  This visual is a great example of a book that is not too hard, and not too easy. 

Your child can also do the 5-finger rule.  Have your child read a page of the book, and put five fingers up on their hand.  As they read, your child should put a finger down for each word they do not know how to pronounce or do not know the meaning of the word.  If the child has fingers left at the end of the page, it is probably a "just-right" book.  If your child does not have any fingers left, then the book might be too hard.  If your child has all five fingers left at the end of the page, the book might be too easy. 






Close Reading and Annotating the Text

​When reading a text closely, we ask students to read the text at least three times and mark up the text.  Each time, the students have a different purpose for reading.  Here is support with why we read the text three times.
